University of Pennsylvania This concept analysis includes the definition, characteristics, boundaries, preconditions, and outcomes of the concept of trust between the family and health care provider. Based on the results of this concept analysis, trust between the family and health care provider is defined as a process, consisting of varying levels, that evolves over time and is based on mutual intention, reciprocity, and expectations. These six characteristics of trust between family and health care provider were identified regardless of patient age, patient condition, health care provider, health care situation, and health care setting. Trust between family and health care provider is important as its development and attainment has significant effects on the family and health care provider relationship, family and health care provider communication, family involvement and support of treatment recommendations, and patient and family benefits. Further research is needed to strengthen our understanding of trust between family and health care provider.
